Autonomous agents can review code, triage failures, and remediate issues — if you scope them correctly. A practical guide.

The fastest way to burn trust in AI tooling is to hand an agent the keys and hope for the best. The teams getting real value are the ones that scope agents to narrow, verifiable jobs.

Start with read-only analysis. Let an agent review merge requests and surface risk before you ever grant write access. Once the signal-to-noise ratio earns trust, graduate to suggested remediations that a human approves.

Context is everything. An agent that retains project history, coding standards, and past incidents makes dramatically better calls than one that sees a single diff in isolation.

Measure everything. Bug catch rate pre-merge, false positive rate, and time-to-remediation are the numbers that tell you whether your agents are earning their seat.
